Neighbourhood Centre can offer support when life throws a curveball

Anne operates the No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) at Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre, and has helped hundreds of families over many years.

WITH increasing numbers of distressed people in Coffs, the Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre (CHNC) is urging people to pop by and ask for help if they need it.

“Sometimes life can throw us a few unexpected curveballs and we find that we need help from other people, even if that is just trying to work out the best way forward for our situation,” Di Woods, Manager at CHNC told News Of The Area.

“Some people find asking for help difficult, especially if they are generally good at juggling what comes their way.”

Over the past few years CHNC has supported a huge range of people from all walks of life, all backgrounds, all ages and all situations.

“Sometimes people find themselves in situations through no fault of their own.

“Sometimes our environment around us changes and it isn’t always something that is immediately within our control.

“When those unexpected things happen, most of us won’t have a plan, or have the experience, in navigating support systems.”

Asking for help can be one of the best ways to overcome a variety of problems.

The Neighbourhood Centre is one of those places where anyone is welcome to pop in, whether it’s just to check where to go or what services are available for their situation.

“Being willing to ask for help often shows strength and courage and can make finding what might help you much less frustrating.

“Having financial stress is a common trigger for anxiety and depression,” said Di.

It’s important to find out what your options are.

“Many families, especially with the increased cost of local rentals, large or unexpected costs such as car rego, medical or dental costs, the washing machine breaking down can put strain on the family budget.

“For times when people find it difficult to meet costs that come up, services such as No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS), which is located within CHNC, can be a useful option.”

NILS provides people on low incomes with access to safe, fair and affordable credit.

“NILS loans may be provided for amounts up to $1,500 for certain expenses.

“The benefit is that there are no fees, no charges, no interest and no credit checks.

“While there are some eligibility options, this may be an option for you.”

A long term no-fee loan can sometimes be a much better option than reaching for a credit card or other loan option.

“As well as offering a way to pay for essential household items, these affordable loans may help you to establish a repayment record to assist in future financial situations.”

Anne, who operates NILS, has helped hundreds of families over many years.
