Coffs United Under 16s girls take on Nambucca Challenge Cup

Coffs United Under 16s competed in the Nambucca Challenge Cup.

THE Coffs United under 16s girls stepped up from junior grade to play in the women’s open grade at the Nambucca Challenge Cup where they exceeded expectations by making it through to the final.

The Lionesses defeated Nambucca and Kempsey in the group stages and then defeated the Banigas 3-1 in the semi finals who were a composite team of indigenous players and Nambucca players.

The run came to an end in the final when they lost 5-0 to the 2020 North Coast champions Urunga FC who went through the competition undefeated.

Lionesses’ coach Brett Hodgekiss said it was all about having fun making the transition to senior football.

“I’m really looking forward to the season ahead and helping the girls develop as individuals and make the transition into women’s football.

“I entered the under 16 girls into the women’s division for some pre season matches and so they could see how they aimed up against senior women.

“There were no expectations, just have fun and enjoy the weekend playing in a senior cup set up.

“It’s an exciting period for Coffs United as we have entered two senior women’s teams and are still looking for first and second division players for season 2022, any enquiries please contact me on 0410414376,” said Brett.
