Rehabilitation to Wallamba Island is complete

Extemsive work to rehabilitate Wallamba Island on the Wallamba River is now complete.

Following a century of agricultural use of the Island, Great Lakes Council ultimately acquired the island in 2011 as part of the water quality improvement program.

By that time, noxious and environmental weeds were strangling the life out of the island and foxes and wild dogs were impacting on the native wildlife that remained.

Council has completed a NSW Coast and Estuary grant-funded project to assist the restoration of the land.

The grant was matched by Council’s funding through its Environmental Special Rate.

Council is now finalising the preparation of a long-term plan to guide the future conservation and management of Wallamba Island.

This will ensure that the island continues to contribute positively to the local environment.
