MIDCOAST Council will re-examine public and community pools within the local government area.

In a notice of motion moved by Councillor Peter Epov and seconded by Councillor Peter Howard, it was resolved that the General Manager is to bring forth a Report to Council, at the earliest opportunity, which reviews and examines the management and operations of all public and community swimming pools within the MidCoast Council Local Government Area.

This report will review the current contract with the YMCA, examining other options for the management of all public swimming pools within the MidCoast LGA, including, but not limited to engaging alternate contractors, and/ or methods of management, including Council directly managing community and public pools.

“It’s clear we must demonstrate leadership as a Council when it comes to the management of our facilities; we need a clear plan that we can articulate to the Community,” Cr Peter Epov said.

“Last year we had major problems with management and the closure of a lot of our smaller pools and this is something that needs to be addressed in this report.

“Frankly, this report is about exploring how we can improve all pools in the MidCoast Council area.”

The motion was passed, supported by Cr Bell, Cr Fowler, Cr Howard, Cr Miller, Mayor Pontin, Cr Sandilands, Cr D Smith, Cr Tickle and Cr Epov.

Councillor David West voted against the motion and Councillor Katheryn Smith was absent.

“I think the YMCA’s management has run a little bit tired and we need to set a different standard if they are to continue a contract in terms of their performance.

“We, as a Council, need to demonstrate to the public that we’re on top of these issues and we want to achieve something positive for them,” Cr Epov said.
