Viability of library facility in Medowie to be discussed

A REPORT will be made by the Port Stephens Council General Manager on the viability of a library facility in Medowie.

In a notice of motion raised by Councillor Giacomo Arnott and seconded by Councillor Chris Doohan, the strong population growth in Medowie was discussed regarding the lack of library facilities in Medowie.

At present, the Mobile Library visits Medowie five times per fortnight making stops at Ferodale Road and Kindlebark Drive.

A street library was constructed as part of the recent Medowie 7 Day Makeover and is operating out of the park adjacent to the Medowie Community Centre.

Councillor Jason Wells strongly supported the motion.

“Coming from an education background, I know how important these social facilities, where people of all ages can gather, are.

“We now think of libraries as much more than just a place where books can be borrowed, and something like a lounge library for Medowie, as it keeps growing with more people and families moving to the area, is really excellent.

“It could become a home to small community groups, meetings and act as so much more than a library in the traditional sense,” Councillor Wells said.

Central Ward Councillor Chris Doohan also voiced his opinion at the council meeting.

“I’d personally love to see it as an adjunct or an addition to the community centre.

“I think a library will become critical for a community of the size of Medowie with its fast growth of population,” Councillor Doohan said.

The motion raised by Cr Arnott was carried and now the General Manager will prepare a report on the viability of a library lounge, or more regular visits from the mobile library to deliver library services to the growing population of Medowie.
