U3A Dance Classes are fun, social and all-round good for you

U3A COFFS Harbour Dance Classes are twirling into action at the end of March and new members are welcome.

TIME to trip the light fantastic; the U3A Dance Classes are on.

“The U3A Dance Classes are designed so you don’t need a partner but if you come as a couple, that’s good too,” Carol Myers, Principal of Pacific Dancentre in Coffs Harbour Showground told News Of The Area, “The dance routines will help you keep fit; we work on a little core, coordination and balance.

“Dancing is good for our mental health and there’s the social aspect to learning a routine and dancing together.

“The music is a bit of everything…upbeat and slow whatever I feel is right for the group.

“I try to read the people and play music they will like,” says Carol.

The classes start on Monday 21 March and go for four weeks on Mondays with the last class on 11 April.

The first class, Dance Fitness, is at 10am for an hour with morning tea at 11am and Couples Class at 11.30am.

“I’m encouraging the people coming for the 11.30 Couples Class to arrive at 11am and enjoy morning tea with the first group – then it becomes more of a social occasion.

“We keep the classes fun and light-hearted,” said Carol.

Lesley Meredith, Secretary of U3A Coffs Harbour is encouraging people to check out what the organisation is offering and join up.

“U3A is a recreational and education organisation and has been running a Coffs group for 30 years.

“We’ve always had a big membership, but Covid’s knocked us about a bit.

“There’s all sorts of classes to choose from, for $70 a year membership.

“Learning new skills, using that extra bit of brain power keeps you alert; like learning new dance steps…it’s recognised as helping to prevent cognitive decline.

“When we meet together, we can make new friends, getting out of our comfort zone and talking to new people gives us pleasure and contributes to our happiness.

“Covid restrictions have been terrible for older people; they’ve been staying in too much.”

With all the recommended Covid protocols in place at Pacific Dancentre it’s time to get those dancing shoes on and join U3A members on the floor.
