Photo: Herb Matthews. THIS is the fourth year of a beautiful Christmas lights display at Palm Lake Resort (PLR). It started with some residents putting up a few Christmas lights, but year by year as the village grew and with the influx of new residents, the number of participants grew and is now a full-blown competition. Email us – media@newsofthearea.com.au The Social Committee started with just a small perpetual trophy for the best house, a lovely little leadlight house that lights up that was built by a resident in the workshop. The next year it was not just the best house awarded a prize but also the best grove. The next year a perpetual trophy was made for this category, a solar lamppost with plaque reminiscent of the old gas lamps of yesteryear that is displayed at the entry to the winning grove. Every year many residents and their friends and families take a walk around the village, and these numbers grow every year, to take in the spectacular, an absolute joy to many grandchildren and the young at heart of the resort. The judge each year is the resort manager and it’s said she is open to bribery. The winners are announced just before Christmas each year. Each year there has been great comradery amongst the residents of groves planning and setting up the displays, always trying to outdo other groves, just short of ‘sledging’ at times. Some residents, who can no longer climb ladders, still join in the spirit and put lights in their gardens; all adding to the joy for others. This year, a new category has been introduced, the People’s Choice Award. Each residence gets to vote on who they think has the best display, and by the number voting it seems to be very popular. The winners of Best House and the People’s Choice award were Barry and Christine Johnson, house 162 in Myrtle Grove. The winning grove was Daffodil Grove. The homes around PLR in Spinifex Avenue also get involved in the Christmas spirit and some beautiful decorations were again on display this year.
