THE Newcastle Jets women smashed five goals past the Wellington Phoenix in a convincing 5-1 victory at McDonald Jones Stadium last Friday. 18-year-old Kirsty Fenton opened the scoring as she sprinted down the left wing and looped the ball into the back of the net over the head of stranded goalkeeper Lily Alfeld. Fenton graduated from the Jets youth academy and is enjoying her first season in the A-League and celebrated her first goal in the competition. Norwegian powerhouse Marie Dolvik Markussen wreaked havoc in the Wellington defence and added to the scoreboard with an immaculate first touch, a deceptive chop and a thunderous strike. Matilda’s midfielder Emily Van Egmond impressed with an all round dynamic display across the pitch, creating chances from all angles and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. It was difficult to tell what position Van Egmond was playing, she wore the number ten shirt but her supreme athleticism found her making runs down both flanks and end to end runs from box to box. Van Egmond started her career with the Newcastle Jets youth academy, and the Matilda’s star with 112 caps for Australia, was a big hit in front of her home crowd who cheered on her every touch. Prolific striker Tara Andrews scored two goals in two minutes and Sophie Harding netted the fifth to send the Jets into party mode. North Coast Football’s Alex Nolan acknowledged the rapid growth of women’s football both globally and on the North Coast. “Women’s football is growing at an incredible rate and the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia is going to speed up the growth and take it to the next level. “We have many girls who aspire to play in the A-League, it was great to see Alice Webster receive an offer to join the Jets Youth Academy. “The Technical Director of the Newcastle Jets Youth Academy, Kew Jaliens, will be in Coffs Harbour for the beginning of the season sharing his knowledge and getting to know the players better. “Every North Coast player will be looking forward to it, that’s for sure,” said Alex.
