THE Bellingen Labor Team running for Council has released a plan to improve community support and services in Bellingen Shire, promising a more responsive Council to the community’s changing needs.

Ahead of the 4 December 2021 poll, the Labor team has committed itself to bringing back a weekly news service to the area, financially supporting key community groups, boosting the arts, and catering to the Shire’s growing dog population.

The Labor team plans to return locally produced independent print journalism to the area every week, provide financial support to key local community service groups, provide more support for the arts, and create more fenced dog parks.

Bellingen councillor candidate Paul Mulally said Bellingen Shire Council isn’t currently a part of the local community and that the Labor team will reconnect the Council with the community.

“Council has to adapt and change and provide solutions to new problems,” Mr Mulally said.

“The housing crisis and global pandemic are two examples where the council mostly left the heavy lifting to others.

“We will work with government and community services organisations to improve access to mental health services in the shire and support youth, seniors, and the disabled, and provide for residents in need of economic, social and psychological support.”

Mr Mulally said a cornerstone of any thriving community is the sharing of news and essential information.

“Local papers tell local stories and share crucial information,” he said.

Mr Mulally said Council under the Labor team would aim to support a weekly four-page focus on Bellingen Shire in the Coffs Coast News Of The Area.

Mr Mulally also said local community groups needed funding and support to build upon their success.

“Some fantastic work is done here by the likes of the Neighbourhood Care Network, Housing Matters Action Group, Youth Hub, OzGreen, Landcare and the service organisations,” he said.

“Labor will provide assistance to ensure that they’re sustainable and successful.”

Mr Mulally said central to the culture of Bellingen is a unique and vibrant arts community.

“It’s loved by locals and visitors alike,” he stated.

“It’s been hit hard in recent years by the pandemic and rising housing prices.

“Labor is committed to revamping the shire’s festivals program to provide artists and the industry greater opportunities.”

The Labor Team is also proposing to accelerate the implementation of the Bellingen Shire Local Housing Strategy, leading to the creation of more low-cost housing in the Shire.

Mr Mulally said a common complaint in Bellingen Shire is the lack of proper dog parks in the Shire.

“We’re committed to more dog parks, and we want those dog parks fenced,” he said.

“This way, dogs can romp, owners can relax, and everyone knows what’s going on.

We will take a fresh look at the council’s approach to “dog on leash” areas and how it manages issues with troublesome hounds.”
