A HEAVY heart was felt by the Woolgoolga community when the COVID-related decision was made by Woolgoolga Red Cross Branch to postpone its jolly Friendship Afternoon Tea events, running since 1991. Email us – media@newsofthearea.com.au Originally designed to provide an outing for local seniors it has grown to incorporate a variety of activities and has attracted countless locals and visitors alike. Retiring, and reminiscing, NSW Red Cross Board Member and Branch Patron Robyn Rooth would like to thank everyone for their continued support and, along with President Carol and the Executive, looks forward to meeting up again in February 2022. Robyn told News Of The Area, “Whilst the format of our Friendship Afternoon Teas varies, one constant is great home cooked food and visitors can be assured of fun and diverse entertainment. “Generations of local children have danced and sung, there have been bagpipe players, guest speakers on a variety of topics, music of all types, jokes and sing-a-longs. “There has been pancake making – and eating, Christmas carol singing from the local school, op shop fashion parades and much more.” For many years the Branch was using the Community Village Hall (the mudbrick building) and more recently moved to the comfort of the Seniors Centre. Visitors are asked to donate $2 towards the cost of hiring the hall and to make a small contribution to the humanitarian work of the organisation. “Over the years those donations have helped with the establishment of the Refugee Homework Group and the Hands On program which our volunteers conduct at the Woolgoolga Retirement Village. “The success of the Friendship Afternoon Tea events has also resulted in increased membership of the Branch. “Unfortunately, the decision was taken to put our Friendship Afternoon Teas on hold until next year in order to guarantee the safety and confidence of our friends and visitors, and to meet COVID regulations. “We are looking forward to getting together again with our loyal members and friends,” said Robyn in signing off.
