AMENDMENTS have been made by MidCoast Council to a Hawks Nest development proposal, which could see existing properties being overshadowed by high rise apartments.

The proposal for a multi-unit residential development on the corner of Yamba and Booner streets has been changed to allow 30 apartments, one more than the previous submission of 29 apartments.

A greater capacity for more people was also included in the amendment, with 72 bedrooms proposed instead of 70 in the previous proposal.

Kathy Poldmaa, a concerned resident and creator of the Facebook group “Hawks Nest Development” noted that anyone who had a boat or jetski would not be able to park in the proposed underground parking.

“I note no trailer parking in the underground carparking [sic] for boats, jetskis, etc,” she posted when sharing the development proposal on Facebook.

She was also concerned about access to the premises being underground, as this would potentially prevent vehicles with items on roof racks from being able to access the underground parking, meaning they would then have to park on the street and increase traffic congestion.

MidCoast Council received more than 150 submissions from the public, before the closing date on 29 July.

These submissions outlined concerns about how the new development would impact upon the bushland and would overshadow neighbouring properties, as well as increase traffic around the area.
