Plogging is the combination of two words: “jogging” and the Swedish phrase for pick up, “plocka upp”.

Plogging is exercising while you make a difference.

Importantly, plogging is an activity that can be undertaken while maintaining your social distance.

Sheralyn’s recent efforts bagging up rubbish alongside the road at Tomaree Sport Fields last week have created a bit of a stir.

This is just one place where this local conducts plogging.

The NOTA first caught up with her last year on a plogging walk that took her from Shoal Bay to Nelson Bay along the foreshore.

Sheralyn Skelton told News Of The Area, “I’d like to thank everyone acknowledging my efforts, from people in cars, young people at skate park and on bikes, also the adults on bikes, and walkers.

“Thanks to the mum and daughter who gave a special thanks, and the mother who helped clean up the mangroves she also gave me a special thanks.”

For Sheralyn, receiving thanks for her clean up efforts is very much appreciated.

“People have stopped and had a chat to me on my walkabouts from Fingal Bay, Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Dutchies Beach, (and told me) that they have also picked up bottles, cans and rubbish from beaches and surrounding areas.

“You know who you are, and I just wanted to acknowledge you all and a big thank you.

“I urge people to take notice of the sides of the roads when travelling, especially on the highways.

“There must be a solution to this problem of removing this rubbish,” she said.

Alicia Cameron, founder of Plastic Free Port Stephens said, “Plogging is a win-win for energy levels, fitness and the environment.

“We encourage any activities that remove litter and reduce its likelihood of ending up in waterways.

“Good on her!” she said.

Clean Up Australia Day is currently taking registrations for a Plogathon you can find out more on their website.
