Sawtell/Toormina Saint makes VFL debut Coffs Coast Sport News Of The Area by News Of The Area - Modern Media - July 21, 2021 Angus Anderson has made his VFL debut. SAWTELL/Toormina Saints star Angus Anderson has made the step up to big-time footy making his VFL debut for the Sydney Swans. Anderson made his debut in a Swans team which featured 14 AFL listed players, as they took on the ladder leaders and undefeated Footscray Bulldogs. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is the second-best competition in Australia behind the AFL. The Swans went into the final quarter with a 30-point lead, but the undefeated Footscray side showed why they are sitting at the top of the table, storming home to kick 6 straight goals in the final quarter to secure a thrilling seven-point victory. Playing predominantly on the wing and half forward flank, the Swans coaching staff showed their faith in Anderson when they moved him into the midfield for several centre bounces. His personal highlight came late in the second term when he booted his maiden VFL goal from a set shot on a wide angle. AFL North Coast Community Football & Competition Manager Paul Taylor said Anderson didn’t look out of place against some of the best players in Australia. “Angus Anderson marked his first appearance at AFL level with a goal on debut, showing that he was far from overawed playing in a team with 14 AFL listed players,” he said.” “Wearing the Swans heritage jumper Angus looked at home at VFL level.” The new Swans player has had a big 2021 which included being named on the supplementary list for the Southport Sharks VFL team, before his talents were noticed by the Swans and he joined the Sydney Swans Academy under 19 team. The Sawtell footballer was also named in the Allies squad for this year’s NAB AFL Under 19 National Championships. The new Swans player had outstanding junior and senior seasons playing for the Sawtell/Toormina Saints last year. He was named the AFL North Coast’s under 17’s best and fairest and finished runners-up in the seniors best and fairest. By Aiden BURGESS
