COFFS Coast Pipes and Drums band travelled south to the Bonnie Wingham Scottish Festival last Saturday 5 June, and travelled home with second prize in the quintet competition. “We did well, being pipped by the grade three band, Newcastle Miners, who took out first place,” Geoff Rogers, President, Coffs Coast Pipes and Drums band, told News Of The Area. “Newcastle Miners are a quality band.” Advertise with News of The Area today. Email us – media@newsofthearea.com.au A crisp morning followed by a beautiful sunny day in the Manning Valley, the Bonnie Wingham Festival would have made Bonnie Prince Charlie proud. Many Scottish food stalls, souvenir stalls and raffles along with Clan tents aligned the Covid-safe common ground in the middle of Wingham. “There were displays from all the bands, Jacaranda Highland dancers, kilted races, haggis throwing competitions, tug-o-war and a display by Highland Rose Jacobite re-enactment group, best dressed Lassie and Best dressed Laddie.” The day started with the Mass bands marching around the grounds with Coffs Pipe and Drum in the mass with bands from Manning Valley, Wingham, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Newcastle and the Newcastle Miners. Coffs Pipe and Drums band has been playing in the Coffs Coast since 1957, performing at many community events. The tartan worn is McLeod of Harris tartan. Some members joined with other country bands in 2005 to form the NSW Highlanders, competing in Scotland at the Glasgow world pipe band championships coming 27th out of 61 grade four bands. This band has since competed three times in Scotland, twice at the Australia Championships, twice at the NSW Championships and once in the New Zealand Championships. “We are currently recruiting and practicing to compete at the 2022 New Zealand championships in Auckland. “The band is always interested in welcoming new members to come along and learn the bagpipes, tenor drums or side drums. “We have piping lessons on Wednesdays for learners and would be interested in young people to take up snare or tenor drumming. “Most equipment is supplied along with our kilts,” said Geoff Rogers.
