COASTAL Claymakers Inc is a group of enthusiastic people passionate about anything clay.

The group began 17 years ago.

The Coastal Claymakers group has members ranging from as far south as South West Rocks and as far North as Woolgoolga.

In recent times they have noticed ceramics have experienced an unprecedented up-trend.

Michaela from the group said, “With the community appreciating and enjoying handmade objects, the need for hobby classes to experience the ancient art outweighs the opportunities on offer.”

TAFE College of Coffs Harbour does provide part-time studies of a Cert IV and a Diploma in Ceramics which is a fabulous opportunity presented for the Mid North Coast clay enthusiasts.

A part of the Coastal Claymakers aim as a group is to bring Australia’s best ceramicists to the Coffs Coast and invite high profile artists to share their knowledge and skills.

They have organised and conducted weekend workshops three times per year.

Michaela told News of the Area, “Gold Coast’s master potter Bill Powell will share his life- long expertise in big pot throwing, sodium silicate finishes and crystalline glazes in a workshop on the 26 and 27 June.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to watch a master at work in this demonstration workshop.”

Bill Powell was born in Victoria in 1959 and moved to Queensland in 1971.

He completed the Fine Arts Diploma at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, majoring in ceramics.

He then went on to establish his own studio on the Gold Coast in 1980.

Mr Powell said, “I value true craftsmanship.

“In this 21st century when all is fast and furious, I feel a need to slow the process down and rekindle the elusive art of the hand made.”
