Winners of Versatility Day: Bev Dunn, Maynie Roberts, Jean Glover and Bette Saillard with Bonnie Mullen and Kerrie Bailey (First National Real Estate Hawks Nest) and Club President Deyonne Page.

 

ON Tuesday 25 May: Versatility Day was held, this is an annual event prize money kindly donated by our Major Sponsor First National Real Estate Hawks Nest.

This year eight teams of Fours participated (randomly selected).

One team member plays a Singles game while the remaining team members play Triples, then they divide to play 2 games of Pairs then finally a game of Fours.

Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

The winners were Bev Dunn, Jean Glover, Bette Saillard and Maynie Roberts, scoring 75 points.

Second place, with 73 points were Wilma Drake, Lyn Nightingale, Dawn Jones and Dot Dallas.

Irene Roberts, Judi Polak, Helen O’Haere came third with 60 points.

Thursday 27 May: Social bowls plus Round 1 Club Championship Major Singles.

Format for social bowls two games of three bowls Triples 12 ends.

Carol Hayden, Ingrid Luck and Maynie Roberts couldn’t do a thing wrong in their contest v Pam Gilchrist, Lynda Richards and Jill McBride winning by 14 shots, 18 v 4. Sue Morris, Jean Glover and Bette Saillard held a lead of 5 shots on the 7th end.

On the 8th end Helen O,Harae, Judi Polak and Dot Dallas gained 4 points, narrowing the gap to just 1 point. Final result 10 all draw.

Just 2 games bowled in the Singles Championship, the remaining competitors had a Bye.

Irene Roberts started strongly and kept up the pace bowling against Loretta Baker, Irene reaching 25 points by the 20th end defeating Loretta 25 v 10.

On the next rink Dale Winter v Robyn Beaumont, bear in mind that this pair were Runners Up in NDWBA Pairs Championship and Robyn reached the Semi Finals in NDWBA Singles Competition, spectators were definitely going to be watching a great game of bowls.

Dale took an early lead but by the 4th end, the score was 4 all, the 8th end 6 all, the 10th end 8 all, the 14th end 12 all.

Over the next 8 ends Dale failed to score, Robyn now holding a lead of 9 shots, 21 v 12. Robyn just needed 4 shots to claim victory, “so near but yet so far”.

Dale made a comeback winning the next 5 ends, on the 26th end Dale just down by 2 shots 21 v 19.

By the 28th end Robyn was now leading by 5 points 24 v 19, the 29th end Dale won gaining 1 point, 24 v 20.

The next end, the 30th was intense, Dale was holding 2 shots, after bowling her 4 bowls then Robyn delivered her last bowl which knocked one of the well placed bowls into the head to sit on the Jack, winning the game 25 v 20.

Great bowling by all competitors.

Round 2 of this Championship continues on Tuesday 1st June.
