FROM 21-23 May, CALM Inc, headspace and Newcastle Football supported a Mental Health Round to assist raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding Mental Health within the football and greater community.

Northern NSW Football CEO David Eland said the governing body remained committed to shining a light on mental health following the success and acceptance of the inaugural Mental Health Round in 2020.

“Football is the largest participation sport in the country, we have the capacity to directly communicate with thousands of players, coaches, volunteers and match officials, many of whom are young people.

“The activities aim to provide volunteers, coaches and parents with the tools to identify signs and symptoms of poor mental health and where they can seek help,” said Eland.

Medowie Football Club’s Friday night Over 35 team and Zone League 3’s First and Reserve Grade teams wore Mental Health Awareness socks for their respective matches.

“This cause is dear to my heart as my family suffer from Mental Health issues and I have lost friends and work colleagues,” said Medowie FC Vice President Steve Withey.

“It is always important to keep the lines of communication open when you are struggling, it’s ok to not be ok.”
