Free Storytime with Coffs Harbour Mayor

AS part of this year’s Library and Information Week from May 17-23, National Simultaneous Storytime is taking place on Wednesday.

Typically Storytime is held across the Coffs Harbour, Toormina and Woolgoolga Libraries, and is one of the most popular activities and a special time of the week when local families share stories, sing songs and create simple craft.

So it is super exciting that all families with young children are invited by Coffs Harbour Libraries to attend their free National Simultaneous Storytime event with the Mayor at the Cavanbah Centre on May 19 at 11am.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is chosen to be read simultaneously around the country.

People of all ages take the time to enjoy the same story together whether they are at libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, homes or bookshops.

Now in its twenty-first year, the theme for National Simultaneous Storytime 2021 is Adventures in Space and Time and is inspired by the book Give Me Some Space by Philip Bunting.

Taking the intergalactic theme to a whole new level, this Australian book is even being read from space by astronaut Dr Shannon Walker on the International Space Station as part of their mission to get more kids reading.

Philip Bunting’s book Give Me Some Space features the main character, Una, who dreams of a life in space.

Life on Earth is just so so-so but how will she get there?

And will she complete her mission to discover life in space?’

Author Philip Bunting believes the more fun a child has during their early reading experiences, the more likely they will return to books, improve their emerging literacy skills and find joy in reading and learning.

Joining Coffs Harbour Libraries again this year as the VIP Guest Storyteller is Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Denise Knight.

The Mayor loves reading stories to her grandkids and is looking forward to sharing in the fun of Storytime again by reading Give Me Some Space in person.
