THE Boambee Bombers overcame Port Saints 3-2 last Saturday at Ayrshire Park to retain their position at top of the Coastal Premier League ladder.

It was the Bombers’ toughest test of the season as midfield talisman and club captain Mitchell Brewster explained to News Of The Area.

“Today was by far our toughest assignment against a quality Saints side and across the park everybody stepped up.
“Although we’re disappointed not to have kept a clean sheet our defensive structure was a lot better compared to previous weeks and credit to our back four who did a good job of nullifying their number nine with most of their opportunities on goal coming from set pieces.

“On top of that our transition was good and we’re starting to see some combinations form across the park, each week we’re putting in better performances and that’s encouraging for us going forward with some important fixtures coming up in both the CPL and FFA cup, “ said Mitchell.

The Bombers have been able to find the right balance between youth and experience as veteran strikers Brady Parker and Paul France played key roles in the win over the Saints as coach Adrian Pickup explained.

“Both teams started feeling each other out without any clear cut chances, a bit like chess for the first 15 minutes with both defences repelling any clear cut chances.

“From a Brady Parker corner the Port defence unfortunately gave the ball back to Brady on the Boambee right side, he beat one player and then he unleashed a left foot bolter into the top right corner.

“Basically a Brady classic, Boambee one nil up and probably slightly deserved for the first 45 minutes.

“Second half saw Port move the ball around better than Boambee without any clear cut chances, a Port move found a way through the Boambee defence to poke the ball in, 1-1 game on.

“Both sides had half chances but both keepers were not really troubled, fresh from the bench, Josh Macintosh’s intensity set up a cross for Luke France to make it 2-1.

“Boambee’s third goal came sooner than later with Luke France again slotting the ball in.

“It was 3-1 with minutes to go and Port pushed forward and thought they made it 3-2 but it was offside, then just on full time, a Port cross found a deflection which wrong footed Boambee keeper Kyle Wood, 3-2 game over,” said Adrian.

Boambee’s next match is a repeat of last year’s grand final against Coffs United which Boambee won 1-0 from a Paul France header.

The match kicks off at 5pm on Saturday 15 May at Forsyth Park.
