ON April 24, Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh congratulated the Coffs Harbour Baseball association on successfully securing $17,000 in funding from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership fund.

“The Association members are welcoming construction of a new concrete slab and scorer’s box on Diamond 2, and replacement of the scorer’s box on Diamond 1,” Mr Singh said.

“This grassroots project is part of the association’s blueprint to further upgrade and develop facilities for their 200-plus players and four clubs, Woolgoolga Bluesox, Coffs Harbour All Stars, Sawtell Dodgers and Bellingen Brewers.”

Like many group activities throughout the country, the Association was unable to hold a competition in 2020, and then had to postpone this year’s season opener for two weeks due to the rain events that occurred through the start of the month.

Gurmesh was invited to make the first pitch of the season and put the ball across the plate to open the day’s A grade competition.

“It’s fantastic to see our baseballers back in action, and I was honoured to be invited to throw the honorary first pitch before A Grade,” he said.

In opening the season, Association President Ben McCall welcomed the funding and said, “This grant will help us to redevelop some of our infrastructure and stimulate growth in our sport by providing improved facilities, and we are planning to seek further funding for other new features in the future.”

President Ben also paid tribute to the sad passing of club stalwarts Kathy McCall and Cate Walsh, both of whom made valuable contributions to the association, and who are sorely missed by the community.
