The unique Bat Flats Art Competition, with its $10,000 prize pool, is now open.  A group of local artists and wild life carers, all members of the Myall River Art Walk team, have put the concept together. 

The Bat Flats Art Competition helps micro bats, Mother Nature’s ‘Mortein’ for mozzies and sandflies, by encouraging people to make creative but practical homes for the tiny mammals.

Micro bat natural roosts are in short supply due to urbanisation and some of the species are now listed as threatened.

Did you know that micro bats can be little bigger than a butterfly?

Organiser Leigh Allen said, “We’re looking forward to seeing lots of entries not just from locals but from all around Australia – and from ceramic sculptors, painters, wood workers, mosaic artists, hobbyists and more.”

Entries are to be submitted by 1 August, 2015.

An independent, high profile judge will choose the winning bat flat and six runners up from 60 finalist entries.

Winning entries will be placed on the Myall River Art Walk and a public exhibition of finalists will be held in Tea Gardens over the October long weekend (2-5 October, 2015) with bat flats available for sale.

Funds raised will go toward the promotion of art and assisting endangered native species.

The Bat Flats Art competition is run by Myall River Art Walk, which operates under the auspices of the not for profit Galleries In The Gardens.
