TOMAREE Neighbourhood Centre has teamed up with Koori Colours Art Gallery to bring a free Art Program for Indigenous Youth to the area.

This program launched on Monday 26 April until 19 May 2021 and will be running Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:45PM-4:45PM and is generously funded by AGL Australia.

It will run at The Centre For Hope in Tanilba Bay.

Clare Saunders, Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre’s Program Support Officer spoke to News Of The Area about the program.

“We initially met Jason Russell, a talented Worimi artist, who’s going to be running the art class, when he painted a beautiful mural of the Mambo wetlands for us here.

“We identified Tanilba Bay as an area of need and so we wanted to provide some youth activities out that way.”

People attending the program will have the opportunity to paint a skateboard or a shirt, whilst learning about the meaning behind their art.

“Jason, being a Worimi artist, will be able to connect Indigenous Youth with their culture, passing that knowledge down to the next generation.

They’ll learn about what the art symbols mean, and learn about the importance of this work,” said Clare.

The program is aimed at Indigenous youth in upper primary school years (years five and six) as well as high school aged youth.

There is no limit on art skill, and everyone is encouraged to attend to meet other kids, have a chat and learn a new hobby.
