RAYMOND Terrace Athletics Centre athlete Cody Hancock has taken out an U/17s National Title in decathlon at the Australian Junior Combined Events competition in Melbourne.

Over ten events in two days, Cody achieved six 1st places, two 2nd places and one 3rd placing in the final event, the 1500m.

At the end of Day 1 of competition, after five events, he was leading by just over 800 points.

At the start of the last event, the 1500m, he was ahead by 1050 points.

He finished that event in 3rd place, but had enough points to ensure a Gold medal.

Cody was the only NSW Athlete from the NSW Combined Event, where he placed 2nd outright, to compete at the event.

Competing in a field of seven athletes, including the U18’s, Cody came first in the Men U17 100m, Men U17 Shot Put, Men U17 110m Hurdles, Men U17 Discus, Men U17 Javelin and Men U17 High Jump.

Deidre Hall, of the Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre, said the club is incredibly proud of Cody’s achievements despite a challenging year for athletes.

“He has always worked hard and is now being rewarded for his dedication,” Deidre said.

“It’s been an amazing season for him in what has been such difficult circumstances with COVID and the incredible amount of rain which saw our Centre be able to compete just 10 times at our field instead of the usual 20 to 23.”
