THE Leukemia Foundation conducted it’s annual ‘World’s Greatest Shave for a Cure’ event from 10 to 14 March this year, encouraging people to raise funds by collecting donations for shaving their head or colouring their hair.

Coffs Harbour local Jim Watts was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma some years ago and has celebrated being in full remission two years after successful treatment at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute by shaving his head and beard.

The event took place on Sunday 14 March at Jim’s Coin and Stamp stall at the regular Sunday markets in the Castle Street car park.

Jim was supported by his daughter Koby and her family, with Koby skilfully wielding the clippers to remove Jim’s flowing locks, much to the delight of a small crowd.

When asked why he chose to participate in ‘Shave for a Cure’, Jim said, “I want to give something back to those who have supported me through my illness, treatment and recovery, and to support a family friend who is fighting their own cancer battle.”

Each day in Australia, 47 people and their families will find out that they are facing blood cancer, and tragically many do not survive the illness.

Funds raised will help with research and to provide support for families dealing with blood cancer following diagnosis.

Bishop Druitt College students and staff are also planning their own ‘Worlds Greatest Shave’ event for Friday March 26, with a goal of raising $10,000.
