THE very first Kalang River Classic rowing race event is a collaboration by the Urunga Mylestom Chamber of Commerce, the Urunga Titivators Dragon Boat Club and The Urunga Lions Club, assisted by a NSW Bushfire Recovery grant.

Created as a concept during restrictions that meant little rowing was possible, the event will feature a series of races around Newry Island on the picturesque Kalang River at Urunga.

Described as ‘a paddling race for non-motorised watercraft’, the event is open to all types of paddling craft, with different course lengths to suit all paddlers, and prizes consisting of trophies, cash and goods.

The event will feature different course lengths for the diverse range of craft, with dragon boats, outrigger canoes and kayaks covering 15 kilometres around Newry Island, and shorter three- and one-kilometre courses for stand up paddle boards, canoes, rowing boats and kids races.

Event coordinator Bruce Miller said, “This is the first time an event like this has been run in our region, and if it is successful, we hope to make it an annual event.

“The course covers a very scenic and beautiful part of the river and will feature the challenge of rowing with and against the tide.

“We have had tremendous support from local businesses sponsoring the event, and all funds raised will go back to the community via the organising clubs.”

Entries for the various races will be taken up until the close of business on Saturday 13 March.
