5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Lift off!

THE High Potential Learning program is off to a flying start with students at St Augustine’s, Mary Help Of Christians and St Francis Xavier taking part in lessons at St John Paul College aimed at extending talented pupils.

This innovative and exciting project links up specialist teachers in the secondary setting with students from the three feeder schools to be immersed in a series of complex and challenging workshops.

The focus is on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and initially involves exploring the aeronautical world.

In the first series of workshops, the children measured flight duration and angles, then calculated the maximum height achieved by a rocket.

The culmination was firing an actual rocket into the air then analysing their calculations.

Peter Watts, Principal at St Augustine’s commented that, “The children were buzzing on their return.

“It was engaging, challenging and so much fun.”

It turns out that teaching is ‘rocket science’ after all.
