THE local rugby league community has mourned the loss of a great pillar of Group 2 Rugby League.

Barry Heffernan passed away recently and leaves behind an incredible legacy due to his enormous contribution to the region’s rugby league.

The Coffs Harbour Comets life member was a board member of Group 2 Rugby League for many years.

He was also on the board of the Coffs Coast Leagues Club, and was the Group 2 Referees appointment board chairman.

He also served as Treasurer of the Coffs Harbour Comets.

Comets president Steve Gooley expressed his condolences on the club’s social media group page.

“Today our club lost a true gentleman and legend,” he said.

“For the past decade Barry has worked tirelessly for the Comets.

“I pass on our condolences to his wife of 44 years Cath and his three sons Brendan, Nathan and Dwayne; and all their families and his adored grandchildren.

“I have lost one of my best mates and our club has lost one of our finest men.”

Group 2 Rugby League CEO Jim Anderson also expressed his condolences and appreciation of Barry Heffernan in a statement on social media.

“Our sincere condolences to Cath and family at this time,” he said.

“Group 2 Rugby League have lost a great fellow and worker in Barry Heffernan.

“Barry and wife Cath were tireless in their work with their club, the Coffs Comets.

“Barry was tireless in these duties and his work with Group 2 Rugby League, and was someone who I heavily relied on knowing the job was well in hand.”

Barry Heffernan’s funeral will be held today at the Hogbin Drive Crematorium at 11.30am.
