OVER 130 runners took part in the Coffs Harbour parkrun last Saturday and there was something for everyone as the participants strolled, walked the dog, pushed the pram or aimed for a personal best around the picturesque 5km course.

It’s a two lap course from Coffs Creek to the Jetty with stunning views of Coffs Creek, Muttonbird Island and the Pacific Ocean along the way.

There was an overwhelming feeling of joviality amongst the participants as they enjoyed their second parkrun since the event was put on hold in March 2020 due to Covid-19.

Kyle Mcintosh led from start to finish in a blistering 16 minutes and 56 seconds with 17 year old Harrison Colyer from Coffs Harbour close behind with an impressive time of 17 minutes 41 seconds.

After a nine month absence parkrun Director Dave Goodwin was delighted to see the regular event back on the calendar and couldn’t imagine a better place to be at 7am on a Saturday morning.

“It’s great to have Coffs Harbour Parkrun back up and going again.

“The unseasonal cooler weather made it a great morning to get out for an early morning run or stroll.

“I cannot think of a better way of starting your weekend – a relaxed run or walk with a great group of people, that costs you nothing and everyone is welcome.”

Volunteer timekeeper Keelan Birch gave News Of The Area an insight into the phenomenon that is the parkrun.

“It’s a volunteer-run community-oriented event which is free and takes place each week at Saturday 7am.

“For those not familiar, parkrun is a 5km timed run and is a worldwide phenomenon at over 2,000 locations across 22 countries.

“It is open to all ages and any speed – including dogs and prams!

“Coffs Harbour parkrun started in June 2017 and is now up to it’s 142nd event with an average of around 100 people dusting off their joggers and taking part each week.

“Runners and walkers start from Park Beach Reserve, head over Coffs Creek bridge and make their way up to North Wall car park before returning back for a second lap.

“There is a friendly photographer on course and times are recorded by registering on a free barcode.”

Mr Birch said new runners are most welcome.
