NIPPERS splashed back into action at Coffs Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club on Sunday morning and despite the rough conditions their enthusiasm could not be contained as they ran, swam and surfed the waves at Park Beach.

News Of The Area interviewed two parents to find out more about the Surf Lifesaving Nippers program.

Adelle Desir, 10, is enjoying her first year at Nippers and her mother Rachel has been blown away with Adelle’s growth in confidence and how friendly the Surf Club is.

“When you live on the coast it’s just a great idea for kids to learn how conditions can be dangerous and Nippers has exceeded my expectations as a sport and community,” Rachel said.

“Adelle in her first season has gained so much confidence in the surf, she loves training and the range of activities.

“We have been so warmly welcomed by the Coffs Nippers club.

“I’m incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication from the club to ensure the kids are supported and having a great experience out there.”

Sam Carswell started Nippers at the age of four and after eight years is now competing at State and National level.

His father Ian Carswell has been a volunteer throughout the journey and gave News Of The Area an insight into the Club and the competitions.

“We started Nippers to become water safe but over the years Sam’s enthusiasm has grown and now we go away to State and National events with the Lifesaving Club.

“There’s a great camaraderie on the road trips, I’m looking forward to the next one which is in Swansea (Belmont) at the end of February and this year we are sending 24 kids from the club.

“Because the borders are closed there aren’t any National events at the moment, so we’re focused on the NSW events.”
