Nelson Bay’s smart parking now live

A smart parking system is now live in Nelson Bay.

PARKING in Nelson Bay just got quicker and easier with the new smart parking system now live.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it has been a 2-year process from consultation to launch.

“This is an exciting day for Nelson Bay.

“The new integrated smart parking system is the first of its kind in the Hunter region and is designed to increase parking spaces, promote turnover and improve safety in the town centre.

“From a bright idea by our Independent Parking Panel in 2018 through to going live today, smart parking will make coming to the Bay even easier,” said Mayor Palmer.

Council’s Assets Section Manager John Maretich says smart parking is simple.

“If you’re paying for parking, you can pay by card, phone, coin or download the Park’nPay app — the choice is yours.

“If you’re paying by card or coin, simply put your number plate details into the meter and you’re set to go — no ticket is needed,” Mr Maretich said.

“If you’ve registered for the app, put your number plate and payment details into the app and you’re all set.

“The great thing about the app is you can top up your parking within the time limits from wherever you are.

“It also tells you where to find the nearest park, which is always handy at this time of year.

“For those residents, ratepayers and workers who have a Park Free Permit, you don’t need to touch the meter — simply park and stick to the time limits.

“Remember, your number plate is your ticket to park and the meters are now live. The sensors will measure how long you’ve stayed and our rangers will use number plate recognition technology to check if you’ve paid for parking or if you have a Park Free Permit, so there’s no need for a paper ticket.

“In 2021, we’ll also be installing digital signs to provide live information on parking space availability, saving time and making it even easier to find a park.

“More than 11,000 residents, ratepayers and businesses have already signed up for a Park Free Permit. If you haven’t already and you’re eligible, be sure to sign up on our website before you head into town to park for free,” he said.
