The TAFE NSW Excellence Awards brings together students, teachers, leaders, industry partners and employers to celebrate and award our most outstanding graduates for their academic excellence, as well as their personal, workplace and community achievements.

The student finalist. Edward Warren, was selected as a finalist for Creative and Design Ideation Student of the Year for TAFE Digital, TAFE NSW’s online arm held at the end of November in Sydney.

Mr Warren studied online while his TAFE Digital support team, of teachers and markers, are all located in Coffs Harbour.

The Awards recognise outstanding student achievements.

The awards acknowledge determination, resilience and leadership, identifying those who achieve outstanding academic results, who provide significant contribution to their professions, and who exhibit exceptional personal qualities.

The Creative Design Team for TAFE Digital is based in Coffs Harbour and led by Elizabeth Tinker.

Students from around the state enrol to undertake online studies in Certificate III in Design Fundamentals.

The teaching team work together and collaborates online to provide outstanding teaching and learning for nearly 1,000 students.

Head Teacher TAFE Digital, Robert Smallwood, based in Coffs Harbour, is proud of his teaching section and Mr Warren.

“It is inspiring to see the instruction and support given to students by a dedicated group of teachers.

“The quality of teaching and satisfaction of students is evident from the increase in enrolments every year,” he told News Of The Area.

Head Teacher Arts and Design, Elizabeth Tinker said, “The difference between a designer and a craftsperson or artist is that designers usually develop things that will ultimately be produced by others.

“Edwards’s strength is his articulation of ideas and his commitment to understanding the initial brief or instructions that will allow for the accurate production of the design.

“Edward is capable of working independently now as a graphic designer or video maker,” she said.

“As Edward’s skills and confidence grow so too does his opportunities for personal growth and a fulfilment and happiness,” Ms Tinker commented.

When asked about his reasons for studying online Edward said, “I have a condition called cerebral palsy and need assistance to walk.

“I am grateful for the online tutorial support and customer help online study has provided me.

“TAFE has given me the confidence and skills to continue my studies so that I can enhance my employability and career prospects.”
