They are concerned that it may be a case of “Dog Gone”, with the decision potentially impacting locals ability to enjoy the sand and sea with their pets. Council banned dogs on certain beaches in 2014 and the community fought hard to have dogs allowed once more. This issue affects the 40% of households who have a pet dog. Locals turned out in numbers this week to engage with Council staff and to have their views heard. In these times of COVID-19 the community group Birubi Paws also held a Zoom Meeting, in which residents indicated they did not want more restrictions on off lead areas and are seeking the support of Council to continue to be able to enjoy the beaches with their furry friends off lead. They are also keen to see dog water bowls added to Council taps to help keep dogs using the area well hydrated, and would like to see shared pathways widened. Port Stephens Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, “The Anna Bay community has been extremely vocal in their support of being able to take their pups into the established off leash dog areas.” Cr Arnott questioned why local Councillors weren’t supporting members of their community on this issue? “Kelly Hammond and other locals have been doing a fantastic job rallying the community and building support for and among dog lovers, and it’s about time the local Councillors do their job and get on board too, instead of trying to restrict the current arrangements against the wishes of their community,” he said. It is important for all residents to take the time to complete the Council survey at haveyoursay.portstephens.nsw.gov.au before 16 December. For those interested in staying up to date on the issue there is a Facebook page called Birubi Paws with regular community updates.
