Mid North Coast Writer’s Sixteenth Novel Featured at Library and a Give Away for Readers Coffs Coast Coffs Coast News by News Of The Area - Modern Media - November 25, 2020November 26, 2020 Karly Lane never dreamt she would be a writer let alone be publishing her 16th novel. MID-NORTH Coast Writer Karly Lane will be speaking about her sixteenth novel Something Like This in a virtual event through the Coffs Harbour Library on Wednesday 2nd December at 6.30 pm. Karly’s newest novel features brumbies, one of her great loves, and a minor character from one of her previous novels, who she felt was worthy of a main character in the book. Jason Weaver is a returned veteran who moves to the town of Ben Tirran, in the New England highland, to build himself a life of solitude in an unloved old house. Tilly Hollis is a character that has lost many people in her life, including her husband and business partner. She now works two jobs to save for her dream career of running an equine therapy program. Tilly loves her horses more than anything and she is determined to make it work on her own. When Jason walks into the cafe where Tilly works, they’re immediately drawn to one another. Writers are often told to write what they know and for Karly that means setting her novels in rural towns. “I grew up in rural towns in general and my grandparents had a farm that we called home and mainly it is the rural that features and it is familiar to me,” she said. “There have been a few books based around the Dorrigo area and I fictionalise the names of the towns and there have been a few set in the tablelands.” Ms Lane’s journey to writing began about twenty years ago. “I’d always liked reading certain types of books and I’d always liked writing and I tried it and put it away for a couple of years and it took some time to decide to do it properly,” she said. Now she writes two books a year. Allen and Unwin, who have been publishing Karly’s books for over ten years, have three copies of her books to give away to three lucky readers. News Of The Area will give the copies to the first three readers to email media@newsofthearea.com.au with the subject line Something Like This Giveaway and their postal address included.
