Or you can donate to other locals already participating in the fundraiser, such as Sophia Churchill, who experienced a stroke earlier this year. Sophia told NOTA, “The big thing for me was the fantastic support I had from the health system and family. “My advice for anyone who has suffered a stroke is to participate in all the support programs that you can. “Even during COVID, I accessed telehealth physiotherapy and other services referred by the great team at the John Hunter Stroke Clinic. “My speech was also affected by my stroke, so I used telehealth speech therapy. “For Stride4Stroke, I am going to walk 100km. Please sponsor me to raise funds for this important cause,” Sophia said. Sophia has already raised $709 towards a target of $1000. She added, “It has been great progress to date, so I am going to increase my fundraising target to $5000.” One in four people have a stroke in their lifetime, that is one stroke every nine minutes. It is one of Australia’s biggest killers, killing more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer. Stroke attacks the brain, the human control centre, changing lives in an instant. The impact of stroke can be devastating for the individual and the family. However, the impact of stroke can be prevented, with research indicating that around 80 percent of strokes are preventable. So sign up or donate this month at https://www.stride4stroke.org.au or sponsor a participant like Sophia Churchill. By Sandra MURRAY
