Email us – media@newsofthearea.com.au On a dreary Sunday the Port Power girls came up against the Cardiff Hawks at Ferodale Oval, Medowie with the Hawks red hot favourites. The Hawks started strong against the junior Power girls kicking four unanswered goals in the first quarter as the rain fell from above. Determined to finally show the Newcastle-based teams how far Port Power had progressed young Caitlyn Ashpole broke free off the back of some team inspired play and slotted the Sherrin through the centre. It was Caitlyn’s and her team’s first goal of a long season and she celebrated in style by giving the goal umpire a high five as the vocal crowd cheered on. Unfortunately the rest of the match didn’t go the Power’s way ending up 57 to 10 in the Hawks favour. But, sports not all about the winners circle as most who play at a community level know. Port Power spokesperson Josie Johnson said witnessing Caitlyn’s first goal on the field is just as memorable as any win. “The youth girls have been playing with so much enthusiasm for the game of AFL and for Caitlyn to kick her first goal at home in front of family and friends is pretty special,” said Josie. “You always remember that first goal and the future looks bright for our little champions!” In other results the Under 11’s lads walked away with a convincing win over Warners Bay 62 to 12, the Under 13’s defeated Cardiff 45 to 20 and the Power Marlins ladies were dusted by 23 unanswered goals at the hands of Wyong.
