Kelson attends Tea Gardens Public School and this award places him in the top 1.5% which includes a monetary award for his achievements. The awards night was held on 6 November at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle and Kelson’s award was presented to him by Merv Curran, competition director, with all the other top performing students in each region. In addition to receiving this prestigious award, Kelson has been selected for the Newcastle Permanent Annual Mathematics Camp with only 152 invitations being extended to the top performers and with only 90 students being accepted. The Camp is sponsored by the Newcastle Permanent where students rotate through a program of Mathematical workshops and physical recreation activities which include archery, climbing, ropes course, Frisbee golf or outdoor problem solving tasks. Upon receiving confirmation that he had secured a spot in the Camp, Kelson said, “I am extremely excited to be challenged and to meet like minded children.” Tahnee Hawkins, Kelson’s Mum, told News Of The Area, “What an achievement and our family is so excited for Kelson and we are so proud of him.” By Ann SCULLY
