A number of education settings around Port Stephens have recently held Grandparents’ Days.

The Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre in conjunction with Port Stephens Koalas held their event on Sunday 27 October.

Ms Clare Saunders told News Of The Area, “The aim of the event was for grandparents and grandchildren to come together and plant a koala feed tree in the Mambo Wetlands to recognise and celebrate the important role that grandparents, step grandparents and grandfriends play in our lives.”

“The event was open for everybody to attend and we also encouraged members in the community who have lost a grandparent or grandchild to plant a tree in their memory.”

Elder Uncle John opened the event with the Welcome to Country and played his guitar while singing about being a proud Worimi man.

Over 100 koala feed trees were planted on the day.

Port Stephens Koalas needs to plant 1000 trees for every koala in the Koala Hospital.

Ms Saunders said, “On a personal note, I really enjoyed organising this event.”

“I love how the community came together to make the day possible.”

“Connecting community is what it is all about.”

Medowie Public School also hosted a Grandparents’ Day on Wednesday 30 October.

Grandparents were invited to classroom time where grandparents helped in classroom activities.

Mr Jason Wells, Assistant Principal, told News Of The Area, “It’s a fantastic day which is not only a great family get together for the community but it is also about acknowledging the great contribution that grandparents have on the lives of their grandchildren.”

“A really wonderful way for grandparents to be involved in the education process of their grandchildren.”

“Grandparents are able to get into the classrooms and help out with art, craft and technology activities.”

“The kids just love it – showing off their work to Nans and Pops.”
