THE drums will beat and the pipes will call at Port Stephens this Saturday, while the annual Scottish Festival not only celebrates the heritage of many Australians but also raises money for local charity.

The Clans on the Coast Celtic Festival is a fun filled, Not for Profit Event, Run by Volunteers and where everyone is encouraged to participate in a range of fun events and frivolities.

A Celtic Celebration filled with traditional dancing, Highland Games, Strongman competition, pipe bands, Folk Band Jigs and Reels, and a wide range of stalls with Celtic goods.

The event will be held at the Tomaree Sports Complex, Nelson Bay Rd on 21 September 2019.

Gates open 8.30 am – 4.30pm Adults $15 Pension $10 Child 5-17 $2 Murray’s Brewery will have some of their Craft beer there on the day and McLeish Wines will have tastings and sales.

At Clans on the Coast you will see the pipe bands.

Watch the strong men in the East Coast Heavy Events as they compete in the 1. 16lb Caledonian Hammer or the 24lb Highland Hammer throw where a hammer head fixed to a rattan shaft is wound around the body and thrown for greatest distance from behind a trig.

Watch athletes throw a “half hundred weight” from behind a trig with an approach for greatest distance.

See the Sheaf Toss as a 20lb burlap and straw sack is thrown from a pitch fork for greatest height.

Enjoy the traditional Caber Toss.

A games caber of 18’1” and 130lb is used.

“Tossers” aim for the Caber to be turned end over itself.

Plus there’s the 40lb East Coast Stone Put. And the East Coast Supplements Dinnie Stones Walk an optional strength event for the East Coast Athletes and open to the public to enter.

One stone being 145kg with small D handle the other being 125kg with small ring type handle.

Each athlete has 90 seconds to walk the stones as far as possible.

The stones must be lifted and walked together; they cannot be walked individually, rolled or dragged. Athletes can pick them up and put them down as many times as they like within the 90 seconds time frame.

Diane Soper who is one of the Clans on the Coast organisers, told News Of The Area, “To top off the day we have a Dinner Dance Ceilidh for anyone to attend.

She invited everyone to join the local clans for dinner, a dance and entertainment on Saturday night 21 September 2019 at Nelson Bay Bowling Club, Stockton St, Nelson Bay.
