School children delighted in getting dressed up as their favourite book characters.

There were some very imaginative creations, including one Medowie Public School student who had a real donkey accompanying his dress up as Simpson of Simpson and his Donkey fame.

Coinciding with this week’s parades was the announcement of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s book winners.

This year, the awards went to:

Picture Book: Cicada by Shaun Tan

Older Readers: Between Us by Clare Atkins

Younger Readers: His Name Was Walter by Emily Rodda

Early Childhood: Tricky’s Bad Day by Alison Lester

Factual Book (Eve Pownall Award): Sorry Day by Coral Vass, illustrated by Dub Leffler

New Illustrator: Grandma Z by Daniel Gray-Barnett
