Although commonly seen played in pubs around the country by amateurs, the reality of professional darts is that it is played by skilled sportspeople. The profile of darts as a serious sport continues to grow and many games are now televised in the way traditional sports like cricket, tennis, and rugby league are. News Of The Area interviewed Raymond Terrace Bowling Club Jets team member, Mr Chris Fisher, to discuss their team’s recent success. Mr Fisher said, “We won the NSW State 4 Premier League Men’s Title.” The event was held over the June long weekend from 8 to 10 June, 2019 at Forster. The team competes in the Maitland District Darts Association A Grade competition. Mr Fisher said, “The Bowling Club has three other teams also competing: 1 in A Grade called the Dragonflies and two teams in the B grade competition called the Bombers and the Spitfires.” “This was our sixth competition together in the Maitland Association.” “We have been playing together since 2017.” “The team has won four A Grade titles in that time.” In their singles achievements, Byron Price won the Division 2 State Singles Championship in 2017.” Mr Fisher is the current Maitland District A grade Singles Champions. Mr Fisher said one of the reasons the team like to play is due to “Friendship, we have made a lot of friends over the years playing.” Mr Fisher encourages people to join the Club to play darts. He told News Of The Area, “If there is anyone out there playing in their shed thinking they are not good enough or worried about competing just do it; take the leap see your local club and get into it. “Darts a lot of fun darts is a sport for everyone.” By Heather SHARP
