The challenge is a nation-wide event for all local government and ACT Government agencies and is aimed at supporting the Australian Red Cross Blood Service through their most difficult time of year – winter.

“Due to many regular donors coming down with either a cold or flu, donation rates drop drastically across the winter months, but of course the need for blood is still there,” explained MidCoast Council’s General Manager, Adrian Panuccio.

“We’re really proud to be doing our bit to help this vital, lifesaving service and urge others around the community to do the same.”

Last year’s Councils Blood Challenge saw 5422 donations received in the 12 weeks of the competition, meaning up to 16266 lives were saved.

The challenge begins on 1 July and finishes on 30 September.

MidCoast Council’s participation will be officially launched at Taree Blood Donor Centre on Thursday 4 July when General Manager Adrian Panuccio will join other members of MidCoast Council staff to give blood as part of the challenge.

Billy the Blood Drop will also be attending Thursday’s launch, along with Mayor, David West.

Donations made by Council staff during the 12 weeks will count towards the challenge, however the community can help too – just indicate when you give blood next you want your donation to count towards the MidCoast Council tally.

The Councils Blood Challenge is part of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service’s Red25 initiative.

Red25 is a life-saving social responsibility program where workplaces, community groups, and universities around Australia unite to save lives through blood donation.

Together, Red25 members work towards ensuring that 25% of Australia’s blood donations are secured.
