In total, eight players from the Port Stephens Power AFL Club have been selected to play in the competitive team.

Club Secretary, Ms Jacquie Ruhl spoke to News Of The Area and said, “To be selected players are nominated by their coach.”

“The players then participate in two try-out nights and 50-60 players are selected across the Hunter and the Central Coast.”

“Selectors watch and in particular are impressed with teamwork and knowledge of play.”

“From there, selection takes place and some skilled players are selected and make it into the team, the Hunter Junior AFL Representative Team.”

Demonstrating their expertise at playing the game, the Hunter team took out a clean sweep of the Challenge Cup played at Cardiff over the June long weekend.

The Representative Team will be back playing in the first week of the July school holidays.

The 13+ team will travel to Coffs Harbour for a two-day carnival, and the 12s will play at Lake Macquarie.

Elite players within the competition may also be spotted by AFL clubs, such as the Swans Academy which Josh Bohan (13s) is a part of.

The only female player from Port Stephens Power in the Representative Team, Madison Jewell is an enthusiastic and talented AFL player and spoke to News Of The Area about her playing.

When asked why she likes to play, with a grin she replied, “I like to play against the boys and to beat them!”

“I love playing in the Representative Team because I have made awesome friends in different clubs.”

Madison attends Hunter Sports High as part of the Talented Sports Program and has been in the Representative Team for two years.

She said, “I like to learn her techniques and skills.”

Madison’s ambitions for her future are clear, “I want to be part of the girls’ team and to captain a side in the WAFL.”
