With this looming threat to our furry friends St Michael’s Primary School have signed up to with the Kreative Koalas program to help slow and hopefully reverse this process.

The program is designed to empower students to engage with and construct solutions to all of the threats that will affect not only their futures but the species that inhabit the planet by working towards a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

St Michael’s Primary School teacher Claire Hendley says that the school is one of ten in the Hunter region participating in the program and with Port Stephens relying on sustainable tourism and eco-friendly development it was a great fit.

“I saw Kreative Koalas as an opportunity for our students to engage with their local environment and to work collaboratively using all of their combined strengths to examine a local issue,” said Ms Hendley.

“We have a diverse range of ecosystems in our area that support the local tourist economy, with koalas and whales being a major drawcard,”

“This program will help our students understand their roles in sustainability and as global citizens.”

St Michael’s will use a fibreglass Koala to artistically represent the results of the research they undertake to establish and deliver a locally minded SDG.

Joining St Michael’s Primary School in the 2019 program are Raymond Terrace Public School, Cessnock Primary School,
Lochinvar Public School, Gresford Public School, Vacy Public School, Thornton Public School, Medowie Christian School, Bobs Farm Public School and Bellbird Public School.
