Its 87 active members have just completed patrolling the beach every weekend and public holiday since late September. During that time, they performed 22 rescues, carried out 102 first aid treatments and 19,643 preventive actions. As well as training and educating its members, providing surf skills to its 94 nippers, supporting the community events of Myall River Festival, Rotary Book sale, Remembrance and ANZAC Marches and Motorfest, its members have also been winning World, Australian, State and Regional medals in competition. Now the works begin. The initial stage of removing the lookout and replacing the balcony railings with a glass balustrade has been completed. The interior is now under renovation. The first stage involves upstairs work of relocating the Kitchen and bar to the North West corner, replacing the stairs, installing a disable toilet and Lift and opening the east face and half of the south wall with glass doors and panels. On the ground floor the east face will be opened with glass doors and the entire floor made level. The west entrance will also be renovated. This work is estimated to cost $500,000 from a $300,000 grant applied for and received many years ago from the Commonwealth Government and $200,000 raised in this community. The Club’s secretary, Maxine Cook said, “Following the Federal election, we are pleased to confirm that the ground floor renovation will also proceed due to another $300,000 grant from the Commonwealth Government obtained by Federal Member David Gillespie.” “The Surf Club is a community asset and it is with the community’s generous support that it can provide its Surf Life Saving service, Ms Cook said. “It is with great appreciation that we thank Mid Coast Council, Tea Gardens Country Club, Tea Gardens Hotel, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club, Tea Gardens Rotary Club, Holiday Coast Credit Union, Tea Gardens Arts & Craft, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Carols by Candle Light, Myall Masters Swimming Club, Tea Gardens Lions, Fiona’s Family Café Tea Gardens and Great Aussie Bush Camp for their support,” she said. It is expected that the works will be completed in September.
