Australia has only 5500 tradeswomen in it’s workforce and that’s set to change thanks to the efforts of SALT (Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen Australia) who paid a visit to Hunter River High School’s year 8 girls last week.

The students were put through their paces in a workshop designed to encourage and create pathways for increased women participation in the trade industries.

Karina Chambers, Hunter River High’s community engagement officer, described the workshop as an important initiative to show the students what was possible for life after their schooling.

“The purpose of the workshop was to encourage an entrepreneurial and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) pathway for our female students at Hunter River High School,” said Ms Chambers.

“The workshop included a safety induction and students created a timber project from measuring up, cutting and assembling parts with SALT guidance.”

The tools and skills involved included, measuring with tapes and set squares; cutting with a variety of saws such as hand saw, drop saw and jigsaw and assembling with drills, impact drivers, nails, screws, hammers, nail punches and different drill bits.

Each tool was explained and the correct use was shown and overseen by SALT staff.
