THE inaugural “Break Your Age Challenge”, possibly the first of its kind in NSW and even Australia, was held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club on Sunday 9 June in beautiful clear sunny conditions.

The new event, which was generously sponsored by Palm Lake Resort, attracted a field of 23 golfers from 60yrs of age through to their late 80’s.

Organiser Dave Gilbert said, “While the initial field was relatively small it was hoped that the field could be grown over the next 2-3 years to become a popular event on the golfing calendar.”

Winner of the inaugural event was local golfer Errol Chivers whose score off the stick was 83 which was 8 shots above his age of 75.

Runner-up on the day was Gerard Power from Castle Hill with a score of 77 which was 11 shots above his age of 66.

Third placegetter was another local golfer, Joe James whose 90 off the stick represented a margin of 12 shots above his 78 years.

“A highlight of the challenge was having Bill Lyon return to Hawks Nest, he was one of the original founding members who had the foresight to develop the magnificent course that we have here today,” Mr Gilbert said.

“The bonus prize of a $500 gift voucher for breaking their age was not claimed on the day.”

Mr Gilbert said, “This will certainly magnify the challenge for next year’s event and will offer an enhanced challenge or incentive to entice participants for next years ‘Break Your Age Challenge’ event.”
