Last Friday, members of a number of community groups gathered at the Golf Club for a special morning tea and distribution of the funds raised from last year’s event.

Organised by Senior Constable Dave Coyle, cheques were handed out to half a dozen groups.

“$2,500 went to the Clinic Bus, $1,500 to Meals on Wheels, another $1,000 went to the local junior boxing gym and $500 to both the Tea Gardens Primary School’s Breakfast Club and the Tea Gardens Karuah junior Cricket Club,” Dave Coyle said.

For organisations such as the local Clinic Bus, these community donations are vital as they run their service without any Government funding.

“We’re now running our bus, three days a week, taking clients to medical appointments in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Raymond Terrace,” Ann Fowler said.

Jenny Kelly from the Red Cross who helps run the Breakfast Club at Tea Gardens Primary was also a grateful recipient.
“It’s donations like this that enable us to offer more than just toast and Weet-bix to our kids every morning,” Jenny said.

The donation to the local boxing gym for our youngsters, will help go towards their rent for another year in Hawks Nest.

And the funds for our local Meals On Wheels will help create over 14,000 meals every year for more than 200 regular clients.

Meals on Wheels President Dan Holmes was very appreciative of the donation, but said with a wry smile, “Now if we could just find someone to donate a block of land and a few hundred thousand dollars, we could fund some new premises as we’ve outgrown where we are.”
