Body recovered from water at Port Stephens; a suspected drowning

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following the death of a man at Soldiers Point at Port Stephens yesterday.

About 8pm, Thursday 9 October 2014, a woman contacted police when her 82-year-old husband failed to return home after visiting their yacht which was moored near the marina at Soldiers Point.

Port Stephens Water Police, Marine Rescue and the Westpac Helicopter conducted a search of the area and located a tender about 400m away from his yacht.

The search of the area continued and at 9:50pm, the man was found deceased in the water. His body was recovered by police and taken to shore.

A post mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of his death. Investigations into the matter are continuing, however, the man’s death is not believed to be suspicious.
