ON Saturday the Karuah Rooette’s travelled to Berkeley Vale for the finals of the CRL 9s Hunter & Coast Rugby League competition. Finishing in 4th position they were up against minor premier’s University for a spot in the grand final. The opening stages were extremely intense with Kayla Campbell damaging the opposition with strong defence and hard running. University’s attack was sharp, scoring the first try and converting to lead 6/0 at halftime.

Karuah adjusted their defence and started the second half with determined running from Ashley Bills, Casey O’Bryan and Jess Neilson. Ebony Oakley capitalised on an opportunity scoring from dummy half taking the score to 6-4.
An inspirational effort from Rooette’s captain Lacey Beneke playing with a pre-existing injury went close to scoring however copped a heavy head injury but managed to drag herself off the field giving the Rooette’s an opportunity to attack University’s line in the dying stages.

Quick-witted Tamara Smith snuck over the try line to score a try moments before the final buzzer sounded to see the Rooette’s win 8-6 to earn themselves a spot in the grand final verses Kincumber.

Players player was a draw between Jess Neilson and Casey O’Bryan.

With a passionate and vocal crowd behind them the Rooette’s started strong with Jess Nielson dragging a Kincumber player out the sideline giving Karuah an opportunity to attack early in the game, Ebony Oakley capitalised scoring a try from dummy half.

Kincumber bounced back and scored a long-range try taking the scores to 6-4. Rooette’s were next to score through Ebony Oakley barging over from close range and converting her own try to see the halftime score 10-6 Karuah’s way.

The Rooette’s were fast out of the blocks in the second half with Tamara Smith scoring the try of the season manoeuvring her way through the defence and streaking up the sideline scoring next to the posts which saw Karuah leading 14-6.

Kincumber fought back hard capitalising on a few questionable ref decisions and run in two quick tries to snatch the game and win 16-14.

Players Player for the game was also a draw Jess Neilson and Tamara Smith.

Overall an outstanding display from all of the Karuah ladies. The postseason presentation saw Kayla Campbell & Ebony Oakley awarded Coaches Award. Ashley Bills receiving Best and Fairest, and Jess Neilson Players Player.
