Parkinson’s disease is a progressive, degenerative, neurological condition that affects the control of body movement. It causes trembling in the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face and causes difficulty in walking and unstable posture. Unfortunately there is no cure. The Tea Gardens support group is run by Garry Boyd and Narelle Hawkes, who are both sufferers. “We have a wealth of advice, tips and knowledge to pass on to any recently diagnosed persons,” Garry said. “The Group has a membership of 16 persons and the majority of these have been with us for several years.” The group is also affiliated with Parkinson’s NSW and usually has a guest speaker from the medical profession or support industry at their meetings. “Importantly you will realise you are not alone,” Garry said. “Members can help make life a little easier with a host of handy hints most of which sufferers may not have been aware of.” The Group meets every second month at the Estia Health Nursing Home at 10.00 am on the first Monday of the month. There is no charge to join the Group. If you are interested please contact either Narelle Hawkes on 4997 0609 or Garry Boyd 0404 279 579 for more information. By Margie TIERNEY
